A day trip is pretty feasible, given decent fitness. And my recommendation - DON'T play basketball -- or anything that will make your knees or joints tender before the trip. Downhill was murder on the knees.
That said, the trip to Yosemite and the top of Half Dome is pretty much magical. Definitely recommended.
